Giving Back

The value of a man resides in what he gives and not in what he is capable of receiving.” ~ Albert Einstein

Giving back to the communities we work, live or serve is an important part of who we are at Merchant Services Inc.  Throughout the year we will take part in cures for cancer, children’s programs and especially working on eliminating poverty.

Poverty affects every state, every community.  The last census completed in 2006 shows that 12.1% of Americans live in poverty.  Of that number, one-third are children.  With the economic downturn of 2008/2009, poverty numbers are rising exponentially.  The downstream effects of failed banks and automobile manufactures have a direct impact on workers who have limited skills and education.  This newest class of poverty will raise poverty percentages to a nationwide 15% to 20%.

What can we do together? Simply, get involved.  Do whatever you can, no matter how small.  Shelters and clothing banks across the nation need men’s clothing.  We are told that men often where their clothes until the threads fall off, where women are more likely to by clothes more frequently.  Yet, the greatest number of people who live on the streets are men.

Contribute what you can, when you can to food drives.  Bring a bag of non-perishable food to a local organization distributing food to those in need.

Give of your time.  An hour a week or an hour per month.  When you see the people and hear their stories we oftentimes walk away thinking, “That could be me.”  Being involved helps eliminate our own personal ignorance about the complex issues that face our communities and how we can make a difference.

If you can’t feed a hundred people, then just feed one.” ~ Mother Teresa

When you give back, people remember your kindness and compassion.  It comes back to you and your business.  Do something.  Do anything.  Get involved.
